Will Smith resigns from film academy for slapping Chris Rock

Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday after slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars and said he would accept any further punishment from the organization.

A Smith spokesman issued a statement from the actor on Friday afternoon.

“I will fully accept the consequences for my behavior. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and unforgivable,” Smith said in a statement.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President David Rubin said Smith’s resignation was accepted.

“We will continue to pursue our disciplinary proceedings against Mr Smith for breaches of the academy’s conduct before the next scheduled board meeting on April 18,” Rubin said.

Smith’s resignation came two days after the academy meeting to initiate these proceedings. These proceedings could lead to suspension or expulsion and it was not immediately clear what additional punishment he could face.

Had he been fired, Smith would have joined a small group of men removed from the academy: Harvey Weinstein, Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby and actress Carmine Cardi, who was fired for sharing the awards.

“I betrayed the confidence of the academy. I deprived other candidates and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be honored for their outstanding work … I am cracked,” Smith wrote in a statement. “I want to focus again on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and art in cinema.

“Change takes time and I pledge to do my job to ensure that I will never again allow violence to transcend reason,” Smith concluded.

Rock, who was to present the Oscar for Best Documentary, refused to file charges when asked by police. He only briefly referred to the attack publicly, saying at a comedy show in Boston this week that he was still “working on what happened.”

Smith shocked the theater crowd and spectators at home when he took to the stage after Rock joked, “Jada, I love you.”GI Jane 2I look forward to seeing it. “

Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia areata, had a well-shaven head similar to that of Demi Moore. GI Jane film.

After Smith’s attack, he returned to his seat and angrily shouted twice at Rock to “take my wife’s name out of your mouth.” When Smith returned to the stage less than an hour later to receive his Oscar, he apologized to the academy in tears, but mostly failed to mention Rock.

The fall was immediate and intense. Smith had supporters to defend his wife, but was widely condemned for responding violently and for tarnishing both his coveted Oscar victory and overshadowing the other winners of the night.
