Cruise, who also co-produces Top Gun: Maverick, noted that he and the feature team wanted to start the project off with a solid storyline.

“I’m not ready to make a sequel until we have a specific story worthy of a sequel,” he said.

The actor also noted that he and his collaborators were postponing working on a sequel until ‘the technology develops so we can delve deeper into the experience of a fighter pilot.’

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer also commented on how the original Top Gun made a serious impression on many of its viewers.

Cruise emphasized the intensive training that the film’s cast had during the project’s production process.

He recalled that ‘we worked with the navy and Top Gun school to formulate a practical way of firing, because if we were going to do that, we’d fly the F-18.’

Bruckheimer emphasized that ‘the flight sequence has to be real. So our actor underwent three grueling months of training.’

At one point, several actors were seen working with members of the Navy service during an aquatic practice session that involved players being placed into rotating devices and held underwater.

Cruise noted that the ‘Navy said: “If you catapult, you have to be able to stay underwater.” So we had to go through that challenging underwater program.’

Several performers are then shown drowning while undergoing an underwater mock evacuation session.

Cast member Greg Tarzan Davis commented: ‘It’s intense. You’re upside down, upside down, and you have to try to get out.

Monica Barbaro also talked about how Cruise adopted a hands-on method to prepare the cast for their roles in the film.

He points out that ‘Tom designed this all-inclusive flight training for all the actors.’

Cruise later stated that he had the cast members begin their flight practice by flying a single-engine plane “to build their spatial awareness in the plane.”

Director Joseph Kosinski later said that the cast was also tasked with setting up their own shots while flying.

“The actors also have to learn how to run the camera, because when they get on the jet, they basically have to orient themselves,” he said.

Glen Powell commented that, although asking the cast members to fly a plane and act at the same time was a daunting task, Cruise wanted to get the best looks he could out of everyone on camera.

“Everyone thought it was impossible for actors to actually be on a jet, but that’s the gift Tom gave us,” he said.

Jay Ellis described the project as ‘definitely the most amazing thing I’ve ever done. All the training one hundred percent prepared us.’

Cruise concluded by stating: ‘I am very proud of what we have all accomplished. Each one of them is extraordinary.’
