Miami Alumni Major General Sharon Bannister will give the opening speech, discussing his path from the University of Miami to becoming a two-star general. Miami President Gregory Crawford will officiate at the graduation.
Bannister is the director of medical operations for the U.S. Air Force’s Office of Surgeon General. He previously served as the Air Combat Command’s command surgeon. As director of medical operations, he is responsible for developing and implementing health care policies to support 43,000 personnel and 76 medical care facilities with a budget of more than $6.2 billion.
He graduated from the University of Miami in 1988, but at the time, he said he didn’t know what to do with his life. Bannister was a chemistry major who later became a dentist and joined the Air Force to help cover the costs of his dental training. He never expected to make that career.
He said he plans to encourage graduates to “discover their why” in life – something that inspires them to make a difference in the world during the graduation ceremony,
“I don’t know if I’ll ever be exactly like him, but I just hope I’m the type of leader who takes care of the community I serve so maybe I’ll recognize their 20-year-old kids. later,” Bannister said.
Division ceremonies and other graduate recognition programs occur throughout the weekend. More information can be found on the University of Miami start web page.
