The body of Traci Genereaux was found five years ago.
It’s a sad day for Darcy Martin.
It was October 21, 2017, when the remains of her granddaughter, Traci Genereaux, were found on a property on Salmon River Road.
The discovery came after an extensive search of rural property associated with Curtis Sagmoen, who was convicted of violence against women.
No link to Sagmoen has been established in the Vernon teenager’s death, but police have treated her death as suspicious from day one.
Now, five years later, Martin is still waiting for answers about his granddaughter’s death and how she ended up buried on a farm in North Shuswap near Silver Creek.
Martin said she appreciates that the police have a tough job and that they have to put a lot of things in place before any sort of charge can be laid, but she is also increasingly frustrated with the apparent lack of progress.
“I’m extremely frustrated,” Martin said. “It’s been going on for a while now. Are they going to make an arrest?
And every time the phone rings, Martin wonders if this is the call she’s been waiting for.
“You’re still hoping for that,” she said, adding that she occasionally contacts the RCMP to inquire about the progress of the investigation.
“I understand that it takes some time to go through all the evidence. I get that they try to make sure they have all their dotted ‘i’s and crossed out ‘t’s. Every time I call they say it’s still an open case and they still have a lot of manpower on it,” she said.
Castanet has contacted Vernon RCMP for comment.
The nightmare began on May 29, 2017, when Genereaux was reported missing.
In October of that year, her remains were found and Martin began the long journey to seek justice for his granddaughter.
Genereaux was one of five women missing in the area.
Ashley Simpson, who lived on Yankee Flats Road near Silver Creek, was last heard from in April 2016. In December 2021, Simpson’s boyfriend Derek Lee Matthew Favell was charged with second-degree murder in his death.
However, there is still no sign of Caitlyn Potts who went missing from the Enderby area in February 2016, Deanna Mildred Wertz, 46, was reported missing from the Yankee Flats Road area in July 2016 and Nicole Bell , 31, was reported missing. to the police on September 7, 2017 from the Sicamous sector.
Anyone with information about any of the missing women is asked to contact their local RCMP.
