Sony’s Spider-Man universe must stop making the same mistakes as the amazing Spider-Man

The Sony Pictures Spider-Man franchise got a whole new life thanks to the studio’s collaboration with Marvel Studios at Spider-Man: Home Trilogy. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies were set and focused on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Sony used the character as a backdoor reboot of the entire Spider-Man movie franchise, using Tom Hardy’s Venom movies to enhance what is now known as “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.” It was a new beginning that was much needed, as Sony saw the franchise stop later The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – but after seeing Morbiusit is clear that Sony is making the same mistakes again …

Too Much Studio

The first thing that is clear from the SSU movies we have gotten so far is that Sony is still letting the studio drive these blockbuster Marvel movies, rather than trusting the visions of talented directors. Poison, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius they all look and feel like elegant chores – limited to the thinnest, most basic superhero movie formulas. They feel like a collection of studio executive notes rather than coherent stories, with the only attraction being the collection of top actors that Sony continues to draw (Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson, Naomie Harris, Jared Leto, Matt Smith , Jared Harris …).

This is not the first time we are here. Sony has been spinning (reading: destroying) Spider-Man movies since they forced Venom on Sam Raimi in Spider-Man 3, resulting in the premature crash and burning of this successful franchise. The same thing happened to me The Amazing Spider-Man reboot (more on that below), and now spinoff SSU seems to be the same kind of damaged product. Admittedly, the public has enjoyed it Poison “for what it’s” movies, and box office odds were steady. The same could eventually apply to Morbius. That said, when you look at the Juggernaut (and steady) success of Marvel Studios movies, the difference could not be more glaring.

Rushing the Universe


The Amazing Spider-Man The franchise collapsed under the weight of Sony’s hasty effort to prove that Spider-Man could create an entire franchise universe to compete with the MCU. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (and then director Marc Webb) ended up on the railroad spawning an entire mythology of the movie universe, with the seeds planted for a third film. a spinoff movie Sinister Six. the introduction of Venom, and even the evolution of the Black Cat against the heroine. As Marvel Studios has learned Iron Man 2, trying to lift a very common universe, too fast, is a bad move. Getting there intentionally and organically is how it is done.

With SSU, it seemed that Sony was really learning from the mistakes of the past. Anti-hero characters such as Venom, Morbius and Kraven The Hunter were intended for solo films that could establish and develop each of them and their supporting characters. Until a crossover event happens, it could be as rich and satisfying as what fans expected from the MCU projects.

At least that was the theory.

The Morbius scenes after the concerts killed almost all the goodwill fans who had dared to believe with SSU. Removing Michael Keaton’s Vulture from the MCU and throwing him at SSU does not make sense, and Vulture contacting Morbius to get the ball rolling into a Sinister Six team is like taking the franchise from 0 in 100 – very fast. And it does not make us feel very confident about his future.

Need A Feige

This became clear when The Amazing Spider-Man released a shared universe franchise: Sony needs a Kevin Feige. And it’s not Amy Pascal or Avi Arad – two people who were at the center of many of the mistakes described above. Having a central shepherd of the franchise has proven to be a key element that differentiates Marvel Studios from both Sony and DC / Warner Bros. At one point, studios need to consider. When you make these franchises unique or small, the creative vision delivers much better results for a larger, more cohesive vision.
