Yes, you guessed it: On Saturday night live made a sketch of the famous Chris Rock slap by Will Smith at the Oscars.
In the sketch – which you can watch above – presenter Jerrod Carmichael plays a magazine at this year’s Oscars, who happens to be sitting right next to Will Smith, played by Chris Redd. At first, the seat was excited to be sitting next to a big star like Smith… but then Rock joked about Jada and Smith took the stage to slap him. Smith returned to his seat, indifferently asking the seat cushion, “So where are you from?” He kept talking politely as he shouted at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth!” When the seat cell phone rings, its ringing tone is “Gettin ‘Jiggy Wit It” and Smith dances happily: “Everything is normal, yes!”
Carmichael also slapped him in his opening monologue: “Can you believe six days have passed?… Doesn’t it seem like it happened years ago? Isn’t it like it happened when we were all in high school? Like, it feels like it happened somewhere between Jamiroquai and 9/11. I was very impressed with my Hitch. “
In case you missed it, at last Sunday’s Oscars, Rock presented the Best Feature Documentary award when he made a joke against Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith took the stage and made a rock swing. “Wow, Will Smith just popped my st,” Rock said. Then Smith, who had returned to his seat, shouted from the audience, “Keep my wife’s name out of the king’s mouth” and repeated it after Rock protested that the excavation was just a joke.
Later in the ceremony, Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard as the father of Aphrodite and Serena Williams in the film. King Richard. Smith referred to the incident (albeit indirectly) in his acceptance speech, apologizing to the Academy and his candidates – though not directly to Rock.
Smith has since apologized to Rock in an Instagram statement, saying: “My behavior at yesterday’s Oscars was unacceptable and unjustified; I was out of line and I was wrong.” He also resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after the incident, although he could face further punishment from the Academy. Jada Pinkett Smith made her own cryptographic statement on Tuesday, saying simply, “This is a time for healing and I am here for that.”
