Each month, suspected shooter Ethan Crumbley will appear in court for a pretrial hearing, where a judge will decide whether to continue to put him in the Oakland County Jail rather than a juvenile facility. Crumbley’s attorneys had previously requested that he be transferred to the Children’s Village juvenile detention center because he was a minor, but an Oakland County judge rejected the request in March and ordered the accused shooter to remain in prison.

The judge’s decision to keep him in the Oakland County Jail must be reviewed every 30 days.

On Thursday, May 19, a judge ordered Crumbley to remain in the Oakland County Jail. A published opinion on the ruling is expected next week, the judge said.

The judge also set a date for Crumbley’s next pretrial hearing: June 23 at 9 am

The alleged shooter faces multiple felony charges as an adult in connection with the November 30, 2021, mass shooting at Oxford High School that injured seven people and killed four students: Hana St. Juliana, 14 years, 16 years. 17 year old Tate Myre, 17 year old Madisyn Baldwin and 17 year old Justin Shilling.

Crumbley faces 24 felony charges as an adult, including:

  • One count of terrorism causing death;

  • Four counts of first degree murder;

  • Seven counts of assault with murderous intent; and

  • 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime.

The alleged shooter was denied ties during his indictment. His lawyer pleaded not guilty on his behalf. A court filing in January revealed that Crumbley “intended to assert the insanity defense at the time of the alleged offense and provided notice of his intention to claim such a defense.”

During a similar hearing in April, the judge set a provisional trial date for Crumbley to September 6, 2022.
