Neighbor’s TikTok account goes ROGUE and pokes fun at rival soap Home and Away

The long-running Australian soap Neighbors was discontinued in March after nearly 37 years on the air.

The @NeighboursTV account, which has 42,000 followers, on Wednesday shared a meme mocking rival soap Home and Away, attracting thousands of likes.

The clip begins with a picture of Neighbors alongside a voice saying: ‘I don’t wish that on my worst enemy’ – alluding to the cancellation of the soap.

The voice then whispered: ‘Unless, of course, we’re talking about my enemy Gwyneth Paltrow…’

At this point, images of Home and Away players appear on the screen, insinuating the accounts wish they had gotten an ax instead.

The TikTok account played down the rivalry in the caption, writing: ‘If that’s all love for Summer Bay.’

Neighbors announced in March that production would stop on the long-running soap after British broadcaster Channel 5 indicated it would no longer provide funding.

“We are very sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and nearly 9,000 episodes airing, we must confirm that Neighbors will be ceasing production in June,” the statement read.

‘Following the loss of our main UK broadcast partner and despite the extensive search for alternative funding, we had no choice but to rest the show.

“To our amazing and loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on a high. From now on, we celebrate Neighbors. ‘

Network 10 also discussed the end of the series in a statement to Australian media, admitting it was a ‘difficult decision’.

‘Today, Fremantle confirmed that Neighbors will be ceasing production in June, after nearly 37 years and nearly 9,000 episodes,’ a network spokesperson announced.

‘This tough decision comes after the search for an alternative UK broadcast partner proved unsuccessful.’

They added that the series ‘will not air on 10 Peach after September 2022’, marking the end of its decades-long run.

‘A much-loved supporter of our programming schedule for more than 35 years has been a staple of Australian television drama, and Australian cultural exports,’ they said.

‘Ramsay Street, Erinsborough, is a dead end recognized worldwide and has been home to Scott and Charlene, Des and Daphne, Dr Karl and Susan, Dee and Toadie, Aaron and David and many more neighbors.

‘Network 10 thanks the cast, crew, entire production team and Fremantle for bringing the perfect blend of soap and sunshine to audiences in Australia and around the world.’

Meanwhile, Fremantle – the production company behind making the soap – said they were unable to find ‘alternative funding’ for the series.

“It is with sadness that after nearly 37 years and nearly 9,000 episodes aired, we can confirm that Neighbors will be ceasing production in June,” they began in a statement.
