While there is talk, again, of Warners changing its DC strategy now that the new executive regime is in place, there are still quite a few company films already in production.
One such project is HBO Max’s “Batgirl” feature starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon while JK Simmons returns as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Brendan Fraser plays the villain and Michael Keaton returns as Bruce Wayne.
The project was filmed in Glasgow and completed its four-month shoot about two weeks ago under the direction of the “Bad Boys for Life” duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. By all accounts, filming went smoothly and Grace told Variety there’s been some preliminary discussion about a potential sequel:
“We have to see this first. But there must be some talk about what it is [a sequel] it could be. I’ve seen some of what we record, obviously in playback and stuff like that, and it’s crazy. We’ve talked about where we took this from here because there’s so much going on in this film.
There are many different themes in the plot that we touch. It’s not just the action. There is a love story. There is this father-son relationship. There’s seeing the world through a lens that isn’t just black and white and seeing colors and the spectrum between things.”
What is the new strategy of Warner Bros. Discovery’s impact on the chances of a sequel remains unclear. For now, the film is still choosing to skip theatrical screenings and head straight to HBO Max sometime later in the year or in 2023.
