Sonic The Hedgehog 2 star Jim Carrey discusses Robotnik’s mustache, his growing viciousness, and the role he took on faster.
Doctor Robotnik returned to cause more havoc Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which will be released in theaters on April 8, and with it have several favorite fans of the video game. While Sonic (Ben Schwartz, Parks and recreation) and Tom (James Marsden, Westworld) continue to defend humanity from Robotnik’s machinations, the iconic Tails (played by singer Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Nemesis Knuckles (Idris Elba, The Suicide Squad) were then added for more furry fun.
Legendary actor Jim Carrey once again plays the role of Robotnik, although it may be his last time. We talked to the star about why he does not have the round suit and how much he likes to give life to eccentric characters like him.
Screen Rant: I really liked your bigger, better mustache in this movie. How was that?
Jim Carrey: It was a manifestation of the absolute ego. Surely, a person with such great secrecy has some kind of insecurity. It’s like buying a Corvette in the 70’s.
I remember when you clicked on the first movie, you were talking about ideas you had for Robotnik’s look afterwards. Is there anything you are already thinking about in the future?
Jim Carrey: No, I live completely in the moment. But for that, it was very important for me to connect with this Robotnik that people used to see in their video game. I even wanted to have the round suit, but the taller ones said, “No round suit. We want to see your love handles.”
Did you try on a round suit?
Jim Carrey: No, we never got to the round costume stage. You never know, it may happen. But I thought the look was very nice, and the interior of Robotnik was also a look.
It starts like this brilliant guy with a chip on his shoulder and a plan for world domination. But when he catches this emerald power, something that the people who played the game will be happy to see manifest, it becomes quantum evil. It is bad 3.0, and now it can bend time and space.
I really had fun thinking about how this could be manifested, with his voice. speaking like a synthesizer just because he thinks it’s fun, you know. It really interferes with people’s minds and creates this giant robot from the scraps of their lives. It was really fun to do. truly a cloud of egoistic ecstasy.
It really shines through how much you enjoy playing this role.
Jim Carrey: Yes, I enjoy it. Because, after all, it’s fun to play characters like that. Because it is unexpected, and there is permission to kill and say outrageous things. And also, to bring the character to your whole body and to be very showy.
But also, character is the opposite of innocence with which we all want to reconnect. He emphasizes how innocent and fun he is and accepts and loves Sonic. Sonic represents this pre-adolescent discovery of the world and enjoyment before skepticism enters.
Sonic everything is to go fast. If you could think again, what is the fastest way to say yes to a role?
Jim Carrey: The Truman Show. First of all, I had thought of this concept two years ago. I had noodled it, but I could not break the code. And then when they gave me this script, the script by Andrew Nichols, I read it and probably in 10 pages I knew I had to make the film. It was not a question. Eternal sunshine [of The Spotless Mind] it was like that.
Comedies are general things to keep in mind. Generally you do not have a very well-formed comedy. at least I do not. It’s like making a little silk bag from a sow’s ear. You really have to work on a comedy to keep it fresh. to make it something special. But these two scenarios, more than any other, were just a direct yes.
