Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic “Elvis” is reportedly on track to collect $30 million from its domestic box office debut over the weekend according to pre-release projections.
Budgeted at a relatively hefty $85 million, it would be a solid start for an adult audience drama but the film will need a few legs to justify its spending.
Chances to do better on the economic front is Scott Derrickson’s “The Black Phone” which looks poised to unlock at least $15 million – almost making a $18 million budget back in its domestic debut alone.
How these numbers will hold up at the weekend is unclear. The acclaimed “Lightyear” was projected to debut $70=75 million or so before release before coming in much lower with a first-round $51 million.
The film is expected to drop to about $25 million this weekend and fourth place as “Elvis,” “Jurassic World Dominion,” and “Top Gun: Maverick” all fighting for first place.
