Dev Patel tries to break up Adelaide knife fight in explosive new claim

Hollywood actor Dev Patel stepped in to stop a knife fight that led to a stabbing in Adelaide’s CBD, according to a representative for the star.

Patel, known for his roles in Slumdog Millionaire and Lion, and who lives in Adelaide with his Australian girlfriend, was caught on camera talking to police after witnessing the stabbing on Gouger Street just after 20:45 on Monday.

Emergency services have been called to the area following reports of a man and woman fighting in the street.

The pair continued to fight inside a nearby service station where witnesses attempted to break up the fight.

The woman then allegedly stabbed the man in the chest.

Patel’s representatives confirmed the star and friends witnessed the fight that was already taking place outside a convenience store.

“Dev acted on his natural instincts to try and defuse the situation and break up the fight,” they told 7NEWS.com.au.

“Fortunately the group managed to pull it off, and they stayed on the scene to make sure that the police and eventually the ambulance arrived.”

Although Patel put himself at risk to help, his rep said there were “no heroes” in the situation.

“This particular incident highlights the larger systemic problem of marginalized members of society not being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” they said.

“The hope is that the same level of media attention as this story (solely because Dev, as a well-known person, is involved) can serve as a catalyst for compassionate lawmakers in determining long-term solutions to help not only the individuals involved but society in general.”

A 32-year-old Glengowrie man was treated at the scene by ambulance officers before being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

His injuries were not considered life-threatening. The 34-year-old woman from Park Holmes was arrested at the scene.

The couple knew each other, with South Australian Police saying the incident was not random.

The woman was charged with aggravated assault causing harm and has been denied bail.

He will appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Patel’s boyfriend, Adelaide-born actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey, starred with him in the 2018 Hotel Mumbai.
