If there’s one thing we’ll never forget, it’s Hugh Jackman forever keeps googly eyes on his beautiful wife, Deborra-lee Furness.

The couple have been married for 26 years this week, and they seem just as passionate as when they met on the set of the iconic Australian TV drama. coreli.

According to the couple, their love story began in the most enviable way possible: an “instant connection” where they instantly destroy each other, but are afraid to let it show.

Talking on ABC Anh’s Brush with Fame in 2020Furness admits that she felt she had met her “soulmate” once she got to know Jackman.

“We just had this amazing connection,” he told host Anh Do. “And I feel blessed that I experienced that.”

How did they meet?

The year was 1995 when Jackman and Furness met. They co-star corelia drama in which Jackman plays a prisoner marked by trauma and Furness plays a prison psychologist trying to help recover his true memories.

According to Jackman, he felt the feeling of their hands shaking.

“[It was] my first job outside drama school – it was a big break for me,” he recalled of the job in an interview with People TV in 2017. “I was really scared. Deb, she’s a big star.

“I was picked up, and Deb was in the front seat of the car. I’ll never forget. She unbuckled her seatbelt and turned around and stretched out her hand and took off her sunglasses and said, ‘Hi, I’m Deborra-lee Furness, nice to meet you.’ I remember thinking, ‘I like this girl.'”

But in a 2018 interview for a podcast Australians in Hollywoodhosted by writer and longtime friend Jenny Cooney, Furness revealed that she had made the firm decision not to date any actor that year.

“I just made my New Year’s resolution,” he said during the interview. “I said, ‘I’m not dating any actor, and definitely not under 30.'”

But then Hugh Jackman stepped in.

“I was like, ‘Who is this guy? Jack Hughman? I’ve never heard of him.'”

At the time of their meeting, Furness was 40 years old, while Jackman was 27 years old. She seemed to be everything he was trying to avoid, but he couldn’t seem to push their attraction away.

Jackman recalled what it was like during the first few weeks of filming in Cooney.

“This was before we were romantically involved or I knew Deborra was interested, there was chemistry,” he said.

“Every time we do a scene together, it’s unbelievable. Professionally, I’ve never experienced anything like that again.”

Furness felt the same way, though she said at first she wasn’t sure what to expect from her young co-star.

“I was like, ‘Who is this guy? Jack Hughman? I’ve never heard of him.’ And then when we’re on set, you know, you’re playing tennis.”

When Jackman moves

The pair quickly became best friends, and Jackman found himself developing a crush that was big, fat, and hard to ignore.

During People TV interview, she said: “Deb and I have become good friends, and I realized, ‘I have a crush on my leading lady.’

“This is something you don’t do. It’s unprofessional and embarrassing.”

Trying to keep things professional, Jackman decided he would avoid all off-camera chats with Deborra so as not to let the excitement in his stomach take over.

But the week proved difficult, and in the end, she found herself desperate to strike up a good conversation with him.

What ensues is a pretty impressive move by the actor, involving three pretty interesting elements: party, drinks, and dessert Crêpes Suzette.

“I invited 20 people to a dinner party at my house,” says Jackman.

“[Deborra] came and I said, ‘Deb, help me with dessert.’ My dad is a great cook, and he taught me how to make Crêpes Suzette. This is a good time to make Crêpes Suzette.”

Once they were alone in the kitchen, Furness wanted to know what had happened.

“I said, ‘I have a crush on you. I’ll get over it, I’m sorry,'” Jackman admitted. “He said, ‘Oh? Because I like you too.’ I never in a million years thought he’d retaliated.”

Whether it’s Jackman’s charm, or the sweetness of crêpes, the confession was enough for the couple to kick off their deeply hidden romance.

Just 11 months later, they married on April 11, 1996.

For the rest of their life

After the wedding is over and cleaned up, they move quickly to start a family together, even though the journey isn’t easy. The couple revealed that they had multiple miscarriages and failed IVF attempts before finally deciding to adopt.

In 2000, Jacman and Furness became proud parents to their son Oscar, and in 2005 adopted their daughter Ava.

Over the years, the couple has been transparent about their adoption decisions, revealing that they decided to opt for biracial children because of a clear “need.”

“We specifically asked for bi-racial children because there was more need,” said Jackman New idea in 2007. “People would wait 18 months to adopt a little blonde girl, meanwhile, bi-racial kids were rejected. The same goes for Ava, she’s half Mexican, half German.”

The pair don’t often share their family photos together, but Jackman does love to share interesting posts every now and then.

For their 26th birthdayJackman couldn’t stop himself from singing the praises of his “amazing wife”.

“Today I celebrate 26 years of marriage with my amazing wife,” he wrote, sharing a cute photo of the two of them strolling the beach.

“Every day is filled with so much laughter, joy and backgammon!!!! Deb you light up my life. I love you with all my heart!”
