The first phase of the libel trial against the Kardashians is underway in Los Angeles.
- Blac Chyna accuses family of slandering her when she got engaged to Rob Kardashian
- Chyna sues family for US$100 million
- Mr Kardashian, his ex-partner, faces a separate lawsuit from his mother and siblings
The jury has been selected and opening statements will begin Tuesday afternoon, LA time, in the trial that pits model and former reality television star Blac Chyna against the Kardashians, whom she accuses of destroying her TV career.
After a selection process that saw many would-be jurors disparage the Kardashians and the world of reality television, the two sides selected a panel of eight men and eight women.
Four of the jurors will be substitutes, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gregory W Alarcon said he would not announce which one until deliberations began.
Kris Jenner and her daughters – Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner – are defendants in this case.
The four Kardashian women are in court Monday and Tuesday, and all are expected to take a stand.
Chyna – whose legal name is Angela White – is the former fiancé of Kardashian sibling Rob Kardashian and the mother of his daughter.
In 2016, the two had a reality series, “Rob & Chyna”, a spin-off of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”, which was canceled due to a second season being filmed.
Mr. Kardashian was also sued by Chyna, but the lawsuit was cut off from the rest of his family and will continue next.
In 2017, Chyna sued the family for $US100 million ($135 million), alleging they had defamed and illegally interfered with her contracts and business dealings, using their power with producers and executives to banish her from the reality show.
The Kardashians have denied any wrongdoing in relation to Chyna’s allegations.
They said in court filings that they had legitimate concerns about Chyna and fears for the safety of their son and brother, given the “violent and toxic” nature of the relationship.
